Asylum and Refugee Law |

|
Refugees and asylees are individuals with a well-founded fear of persecution on the basis of their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion. Asylum is a complicated legal matter with very high stakes. If the application is denied, you will be required to leave the U.S. An asylum application usually must be filed within one year after entering the U.S. unless there is evidence of changed circumstances. Telling a coherent story about what happened is critical to a favorable outcome. Unfortunately, persecution can leave a person confused about the sequence of events and easily disoriented. Aggressive questioning by an immigration official may disorient you and can contribute to an adverse credibility finding. When combined with limited English language skills, asylum proceedings become very difficult without the assistance of a strong legal advocate, even if an interpreter is present. Asylees maximize their chances for a successful asylum application if they work with an attorney when they are filing the application, not when they get referred to Immigration Court or when they need assistance with an appeal. If you are thinking about filing an asylum application, contact us. We do not often accept asylum cases at this time because they are extremely time consuming cases |
